As a business grows it’s vital for its leaders to grow their own skills too. This article explores the potentially contentious subject of when leaders fail to address their limitations, & as a result create barriers preventing them & their business from reaching their true potential…

Introducing the topic & author

In business, growth is often synonymous with success. Companies strive to expand their reach. Increase revenue, and enhance their market presence. But ultimately, the real goal for every business is maximising profits.

However, inevitably, all businesses encounter various barriers that hinder their growth.

As a business consultant, my clients engage me to help them take their business to the next level. This sometimes requires me to tell them what they need to know, as opposed to what they want to hear. And in truth, for certain leaders, some barriers are easier to address than others.

“the fact is, as a business grows it’s vital for leaders to grow their own skills”

One of the hardest conversations I have, is with business owners and senior leaders who are perhaps victims of their own success.

Specifically, they’ve successfully grown their business, but not developed themselves at the same rate.

It’s important to point out, this is not a negative conversation, or a personal criticism. Although, some may initially take offence.

But the fact is, as a business grows it’s vital for leaders to grow their own skills, or bring others into the business to support them, with the skills needed to manage the organisational growth. And more importantly, enable the business to continue to flourish.

This article explores the potentially contentious subject of when leaders fail to address their limitations, and as a result create barriers preventing them and their business from reaching their true potential.

How leaders can create barriers, & prevent their business realising it’s potential

Business leaders are fundamentally the biggest influence on a business. Therefore understandably, their personal behaviours influence the culture of the business, and ultimately directly affect business success.

As a business owner or senior leader, it’s critical to understand how your behaviours may unintentionally create barriers, preventing you and your business from realising it’s true potential.

Once you understand the barriers, to achieve sustainable business growth it’s essential to devise and implement strategies to overcome them.

Common barriers individuals create, that limit company growth

So now, based on my experiences, I’ll briefly touch on some common barriers individuals create, that limit company growth. In short, creating bottlenecks within the business, that can affect everything from decision-making, to day-to-day operations. Here are just a few examples.

Centralised decision making

When a company’s decision-making is concentrated in a few key individuals, it can create delays and impede agility.

As a result, this bottleneck often leads to slow response times to market changes and stifles innovation.

Lack of delegation

Many companies struggle with growth because leaders refuse to delegate tasks or responsibilities.

This not only overburdens those leaders, but also deprives other employees of growth opportunities.

Consequently, this leads to decreased morale, reduced productivity, and stifles business growth.

Resistance to change

Individuals who resist change can be a significant barrier to company growth. Whether it’s the adoption of new technologies, processes, or business models, resistance can slow progress and limit competitiveness.

Inadequate communication

Effective communication is key to company performance and growth. When individuals fail to communicate properly, it can lead to misunderstandings, decreased collaboration, and misalignment of goals. This lack of coordination can severely impact growth trajectories.

Inconsistent performance

Companies depend on consistent performance from their employees to meet objectives and achieve growth. When individuals have inconsistent performance, it disrupts workflow and can lead to missed opportunities.

Prevention Strategies for Bottlenecks

Preventing bottlenecks caused by individuals requires proactive management, and a focus on fostering a growth-oriented culture. Here are some strategies to address these bottlenecks:

Empower Decentralized Decision-Making

Encourage a culture of decentralized decision-making by empowering employees at various levels to make decisions within their scope of work. This reduces bottlenecks and fosters innovation.

This culture of adaptability ensures that resistance to change is minimised.

Implement clear and efficient communication channels within the organisation. This could include regular meetings, collaborative tools, and transparent feedback mechanisms.

When employees communicate effectively, it enhances collaboration and reduces bottlenecks.

Develop Consistent Performance Standards

Establish consistent performance standards across the organization. By setting clear expectations and providing support to meet those standards, companies can ensure a stable and productive workforce.

Conclusion

It maybe a cliche, but many cliches are created by fact. A business is only as good as its people. And ultimately, leaders are the most critical people in a business, influencing its  success.

What’s important to realise is, a successful leader may start the business, or join an established company, either way one of the fundamental objectives that measures their success will be the business’s growth.

However, as the business grows, every leader will only be able to take it so far, before their required to develop additional personal skills. Or employ others with the skills required for the business to maintain its new levels. Even moreso, to continue its growth and achieve maximum success.

So, it’s important to understand that bottlenecks caused by individuals can significantly impede a company’s growth. By identifying these bottlenecks and implementing strategies to prevent them, companies can create a more flexible, adaptive, and growth-oriented environment.

Through decentralized decision-making, effective delegation, a culture of adaptability, clear communication, and consistent performance standards, businesses can overcome these obstacles and pave the way for sustainable growth.
