At last the summer months are here. Hopefully, the summer weather will be too. However more importantly, as we ‘ve reached the halfway point of the year, how is 2021 shaping up for you?
What we’re seeing from the market
As previously reported, despite our market specialisation it’s been difficult to gain a complete picture of the whole industry, over the last year or so. Back in September last year, I reported on the mixed signals we were getting from the industry. Including the results of our business survey. However, it’s apparent that some companies have done better than others. So, first here’s a brief summary of what we’re seeing from the market, in the first half of 2021.
Many of our clients achieved strong commercial results last year, despite the initial outlook in March 2020, and continue to enjoy the momentum carried over this year. Others, perhaps in less robust sectors, have taken affirmative action. Revising their strategy, business model and are now targeting growth in new markets.
In both cases of the client profiles outlined above, our clients have engaged us to help them position their business. Ready to capitalise on the current increase in business opportunities, and take advantage of the predicted biggest economic growth since World War 2.
To balance our view of the industry
In order to provide the most accurate summary its important to balance our above view of the industry. Of course, our birds eye view of the markets is slightly tainted by the fact we’re engaged by companies on the front foot. Those taking decisive action, either to further develop off the back of recent success. Or alternatively, to turnaround poor business performance and return to growth.
Despite the continuous increase of positivity this year, I suspect some businesses are sitting on their hands. And as a result, they’re currently off our radar. However, as demonstrated by the recent pandemic, companies that reacted quickest outperformed their competitors who were more slow to react.
To conclude, the reality is companies that are currently doing nothing, are unfortunately losing ground on their more proactive competitors, and the gap will only increase further.
Get ready for the new norm
The new norm maybe a phrase born from the coronavirus pandemic. However, many of the forced actions businesses had to make, were already on the cards. And as a result, regardless of covid, would have been and still will be necessary in the not to distant future. To put it differently, covid may have helped business get ready for the new norm. A new norm that we were already heading towards, with or without the pandemic.
As we learn to live with the virus and its apparent mutations, the world will return to normality. However, business who return to their old pre-pandemic model will be challenged by numerous already visible, and possibly invisible, disruptions. Some of which can easily be solved by continuing to embrace organisational changes adopted for the pandemic.

Faced with all the common, traditional business challenges, as well as new emerging, social, environmental, technological, and other pain points never experienced before. To successfully navigate today’s increasingly dynamic business environment, requires dynamic leadership.
To embrace change, business owners and senior leaders need to embrace new thinking, and drive it though the organisation in order to win in the new norm. The most obvious answer is not necessarily the correct one. However, time waits for no one, and procrastination is not an option.
The pursuit of long-term perfection is good behaviour. But in the fast paced world we live in today perfection is a moving target. If you don’t take care of the here and now, your business may not survive the journey. Furthermore, if and when you reach it, chances are your current vision of perfection may well be outdated.
Long-term, and short term planning, along with affirmative action focusing on agility, efficiency, capability, productivity and performance, could deliver more growth in profit than the obvious pursuit of just increasing sales. Combine both, and you’ll set your self up for sustainable success and win in the new norm.
