Passive Talent, i.e. those not looking for a job, but are open to the right career opportunity, makes up c.70% of the global talent pool. Savvy leaders know this. They look beyond the limitations of job adverts. As a result, some of the best career opportunities are never advertised. If you’re one of the 70%, this article provides insights into the hidden job market. Discover how you can gain access to confidential career opportunities, & increase your career success…

Some of the best career opportunities never get advertised

Right now, we’re working on several confidential recruitment assignments. That’s not unusual for us. However, what is unusual is that in this article I’m revealing the all important hidden job market.

The truth is simple: not all jobs are advertised. In fact, some of the most influential, rewarding, and career-defining roles stay deliberately invisible. And if you’re invisible to the right people, those opportunities will pass you by, without you ever knowing they existed.

If you have the career ambition, and the talent to justify your aspirations, then you need to understand how the hidden job market works. And more importantly, how to position yourself inside it.

Why the best roles stay quiet

When a company needs to hire, you might assume they’ll post a job advert. However, when recruiting Senior, Executive, and high impact professional Talent, that’s often the last thing they’ll do.

Only 20% of executive roles are ever advertised publicly. The other 80%, well, they’re filled through confidential search, targeted headhunting, and trusted referrals.

Other examples of confidential career opportunities, that companies may not want to advertise, include when they’re:

1. Replacing a senior leader without signalling it to the market
2. Preparing for a merger, acquisition, or strategic pivot
3. Opening a new market or division quietly
4. Positioning for a major growth play before competitors notice
5. Seeking new leaders to drive a transformation before announcing it publicly
6. Business is planning to sell, or the owner / managing directors exit

In these scenarios, and others, a public job posting isn’t just ineffective, it’s a potentially dangerous liability.

Equally, top organisations and savvy leaders know the talent they want is rarely scrolling job boards.

Why? Because they’re to busy delivering results where they are.

And that’s why they call recruiters like us, who are capable of sourcing passive talent, and filling confidential jobs. Rather than those who are reliant on recruitment advertising.

The hidden job market is real

Passive talent, defined as people who aren’t actively applying for jobs but would move for the right opportunity, make up around 70% of the global workforce.

These are the game changers. The value creators. The leaders, and experienced industry leading talent, who can transform a company’s trajectory. And great business leaders know this.

As a result, their talent attraction and acquisition strategies look beyond the low hanging fruit, and the limitation of only considering the smaller pool of candidates, that job adverts can only reach.

So, if you’re only watching job boards, you’ll never see most of these opportunities.

To put this in context, we’ve filled roles ranging from C-suite appointments to strategic market-entry leadership positions, even opportunities to acquire or lead businesses outright. Or open new offices overseas. None of these career opportunities were ever advertised.

So, if you want to access the hidden job market, and be included in some of the best career opportunities that are never advertised, you must make yourself visible. Or else you risk missing out.

1. Build relationships with industry specialist recruiters

Not every specialist is easy to find. Some aren’t on the first page of Google. Why, because they don’t rely on advertising, and as a result may be less visible.

However, it’s worth doing a deep dive to find those who operate in your niche. Call them. Let them understand your aspirations, and where you add the most value.

They’ll give you career advice, and most importantly remember you when the right opportunity comes up.

Or if you want, they could even take a discreet, proactive approach to boost your career search, protecting your identity which you couldn’t do yourself.

2. Don’t overlook discipline or seniority recruitment specialists

Some recruiters specialise in vertical markets, but others specialise in specific industry disciplines, or seniority levels.

These recruiters can open doors you didn’t know existed, including outside your current sector, based on a focus on your transferable skills.

3. Optimise your LinkedIn presence

LinkedIn is no longer just a professional networking site. Nor is it just a job board.

Today, LinkedIn is a multi-purpose platform, and it’s certainly a powerful research tool for head-hunters.

If you want to make yourself visible, and be made aware of confidential career opportunities, then keep your profile updated. Include your direct / personal contact details, and engage with those who request to connect, or invite those who’ve viewed your profile to connect.

Chances are, they’ll either be interested in talking to you now, but if not now, in the future.

So, make yourself visible, and equally import easy to contact.

Put yourself on our radar

Not all the recruitment assignments we handle are confidential, but many are. Equally important to point out, the majority of successful introductions we make come from our network, and direct outreach / head hunting, not just job adverts.

You don’t need to be actively looking for a career move right now. In fact, you don’t even need an up to date CV.

But if you want to be in the running for opportunities that could transform your career, but might never get advertised, we need to know you exist.

So, register with us now. It only takes a few minutes.

And finally, to sum up, remember the right career opportunity for you might not be made public, but when it comes up, if you want to be one of the first to hear about it, then you must be visible and contactable, to ensure you don’t get overlooked.
